PLTW - Madison High School Project Lead the Way Program Gains National Certification
During the Fall Conference for PLTW, Madison High School received National Certification for the Project Lead the Way Program. This honor is bestowed upon those high schools that have met the rigorous criteria set by PLTW. PLTW has been a growing part of Madison High School for the past several years with enrollment increasing each year.
New to the curriculum this year has been the the addition of the Biomedical Science program. This is in addition to a full complement of pre-engineering courses offered as a part of Project Lead the Way Engineering Program. For more information about PLTW in Ohio visit http://www.pltwohio.org.
Fundations Unlocks a New Piece of the Reading Puzzle
Our first and second grade teachers have been implementing Fundations, a core phonics program, designed to build a consistent approach to teaching the essential building blocks of early reading skills to our students. The program is researched based and will help improve the reading fluency of students with diverse reading levels. Students in first and second grade are spending 30 minutes a day reinforcing skills as well as learning new ones. One of the primary goals of the program is to provide a consistent platform of instruction of basic reading skills to intervene early for at-risk readers and enrich those students reading above grade level.

Facilities Supervisor
Buildings and grounds of the school district constitute one of the greatest investments of the Madison Board of Education. It is in the best interest of the students, school district and community to protect the investment through an effective maintenance program.
The district's program is designed to address preventative, routine and emergency maintenance of the schools' physical plant and facilities to support the educational process and meet the expectations of the community.
Duties of this department's four-member staff are far-reaching, including working with building custodians who are involved in the care, cleaning, and complete maintenance of all school facilities, as well as our athletic facilities, stadium, and grounds.
During the winter months, this staff also plows all parking lots and driveways to ensure safe entry onto school grounds.
Close cooperation with local police and fire departments provides for secure buildings overall and protection from fire hazards and faulty equipment.
The Director of Operations oversees many of the behind-the-scenes services that keep Madison Local Schools running safely and efficiently. Community members, staff, and families may contact the Director of Operations regarding district facilities maintenance and repairs, transportation, custodial services, grounds, operational concerns, and building access.
This office also manages job postings, hiring, and onboarding for operational support staff, including maintenance, custodial, and grounds personnel. The Director of Operations works closely with district administrators and staff to coordinate resources, address facility needs, and ensure our schools provide a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students and employees.

Student Services
The Student Services Department ensures that all students with disabilities are provided a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) that emphasizes specially-designed instruction to meet their unique needs.
The Madison Local Schools Student Services Department is committed to providing the support needed for children with disabilities to flourish in their academic career and to create a foundation for success in their future aspirations. This also includes students from culturally diverse backgrounds, economically disadvantaged students, homeless students, and any students who may have special circumstances. Our department is in compliance with federal and state regulations and fosters alignment with Ohio's Operating Standards, Special Education Model Policies and Procedures.
Our support service staff consists of intervention specialists, school psychologists, speech/language pathologists, occupational therapists, certified occupational therapy assistants, physical therapists, educational assistants, mental health counselors, homebound tutors, teachers of the deaf, sign language interpreters, EL teachers and EL educational assistants.

Child Find
Child Find is the process of identifying, locating, and evaluating children suspected of having a disability and who may be in need of special education and related services. The school district provides special education services to any child who qualifies as having a disability according to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Operating Standards for Ohio’s Schools Serving Children with Disabilities.

If you suspect your child may have a disability, please contact the school that your child attends for more information.
What happens next?
Madison Local Schools will contact the parents of the child to discuss the next steps in the evaluation and identification process. EvaluationRoadmapIf you suspect a child may have a disability, help is available.
After receiving a referral for a suspected disability from a parent, agency, or school personnel, a team of qualified professionals reviews all available information, including input from the parents and interventions implemented, to determine if a child who is having academic, behavioral, communication, or health problems is suspected of having a disability.
This process usually occurs at a meeting called a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) meeting or an Intervention Assistance Team (IAT) meeting. If the child is determined to have a suspected disability, the school district will evaluate him or her at no cost to the parent within 90 days.
Children who are identified as having a disability are eligible to receive special education and/or related services. An Individualized Education Program (IEP) will be developed by a team of individuals, including the parent(s), a general education teacher, a special education teacher, a school district representative, other individuals who have knowledge of the child, and the child, as appropriate. The IEP will identify what type of special education services the child will receive and where those services will be provided.
Families are encouraged to work with their child's school if there are concerns with the child's learning.

504 Compliance
Section 504 prohibits discrimination against disabled persons, including both students and staff members, by school districts receiving federal, financial assistance. Included in the U.S. Department of Education regulations for Section 504 is the requirement that disabled students be provided with free appropriate public education (FAPE). These regulations require identification, evaluation, the provisions of appropriate services and procedural safeguards.
With respect to most disabled students, many aspects of Section 504 regulations concerning FAPE parallel the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). In those areas, by fulfilling responsibilities under IDEA and state law a district is also meeting the standards of the Section 504 regulations.
The IDEA defines as eligible only students who have certain specified types of impairments and who, because of one of those conditions, need special education. Section 504, on the other hand, protects all disabled students, defined as those having any physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities (including learning). Section 504 covers all students who meet this definition, even if they do not qualify under IDEA as needing a special education program.
The determination of what services are needed must be made by a group of persons knowledgeable about the student. The group should review the nature of the disability, how it affects the students education, whether special services are needed and if so what those services are. The decision about Section 504 eligibility and services must be documented in the student’s file and reviewed periodically.
In summary, it is important to keep in mind that some students who have a physical or mental condition that limits their ability to participate in the education program are entitled to rights under Section 504 even though they may not fall into IDEA categories and may not be covered by the law.

The Madison Local School District makes every attempt to identify gifted students from all special populations and diverse backgrounds. Assessment instruments and conditions shall be used that are appropriate for each student. All tests administered appear on the current Chart of Approved Gifted Identification/Screening Instruments (Ohio Department of Education).

Homeless/McKinney-Vento
The purpose of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Children and Youth Program is to ensure that all children and youth, including preschoolers, have equal access to the same free and appropriate public education as non-homeless children and youth.
If your family lives in any of the following situations:
- In a shelter
- In a motel or campground due to the lack of an alternative adequate accommodation
- In a car, park, abandoned building, or bus or train station
- Doubled up with other people due to the loss of housing or economic hardship
Your school-age children may qualify for certain rights and protections under the federal McKinney-Vento Act.
- Receive a free, appropriate public education
- Enroll in school immediately, even if lacking documents normally required for enrollment
- Enroll in school and attend classes while the school gathers needed documents
- Enroll in the local school, or continue attending their school of origin (the school they attended when permanently housed or the school in which they. were last enrolled), if that is your preference and is feasible.
- If the school district believes that the school you select is not in the best interest of your children, then the district must provide you with a written explanation of its position and inform you of your right to appeal its decision.
- Receive transportation to and from the school of origin, if you request this
- Receive educational services comparable to those provided to other students, according to your children's needs

Superintendent
Dear Madison Community,
I am proud and excited to serve as the Superintendent of Madison Local Schools and bring a strong background in education to this role. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Akron and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Cincinnati. I also hold a Superintendent’s license and am currently pursuing my Doctorate in Education. Before joining Madison, I had the opportunity to serve as a high school teacher, middle school building administrator, district administrator, and superintendent.
I’m the proud father of four children, three currently in college and my youngest finishing high school. I deeply value time with my family, my siblings, and enjoy listening to books, podcasts, and music. I also love hiking, exploring the many beautiful areas in Ohio, and connecting with people to learn and grow. This past year, I learned that I greatly enjoy the sunshine and have attempted to capture as much of the sun as possible.
Throughout my career as a teacher, coach, and administrator, I’ve remained focused on student success through active engagement and academic achievement. I believe in servant leadership, leading through active involvement, shared decision-making, and creating positive learning environments built on transparency and collaboration with staff, families, and the community. I am so fortunate to be part of Madison and be surrounded by so many caring and compassionate individuals who make our district outstanding. About the Superintendent's Office
The Superintendent of Schools is the chief executive officer of, and is appointed by, the Madison Local Board of Education.
The Superintendent is responsible for administering all aspects of school district affairs in accordance with federal and state laws, the standards and regulations of the Ohio Department of Education, and the adopted policies and rules and regulations of the Madison Local Board of Education.
Responsible for the administration and supervision of the school district, the Superintendent is the professional advisor of the Board and leader of both the teaching staff and support staff. Since division of labor is essential for managing a large organization, it is expected that the Superintendent will delegate portions of the administrative tasks to building principals and appropriate staff. The responsibility for all activities within any building during school hours belongs to the person deemed accountable to the Superintendent.
The Superintendent exercises leadership and contributes to worthwhile civic activities and enterprises for the benefit of the entire Madison community.

Madison Local Schools: Annual SB29 Student Data Notice
In accordance with Ohio Senate Bill 29 and Board Policy 6460, Madison Local Schools provides annual notice regarding the use of educational technology providers that may access student education records. The District partners with a variety of providers to support instruction, assessment, communication, and student services. These may include student information systems, special education/IEP platforms, assessment tools, learning management systems, communication applications, and intervention or progress monitoring programs. A complete and current list of providers is available upon request or on the District website.
These providers may have access to limited student information necessary to perform their services, including:
- Student name and identification number
- Enrollment and demographic information
- Academic records and grades
- Assessment results
- Attendance data
- Special education records, including IEP-related information when applicable
All providers are contractually required to protect student data, use information only for educational purposes, and comply with applicable privacy laws, including FERPA, COPPA, and Ohio law. Parents/guardians and eligible students have the right to request and review any contract between the District and a technology provider and may ask questions regarding how student data is used and protected.

The Treasurer's Office is responsible for all financial operations of the Madison Local School District as well as maintaining the records for the Board of Education.
The staff has many years of service with the District and takes pride in the services provided.
Annually, auditors from the Auditor of State's office review the operations of the District for compliance with state and federal requirements and to ensure that we have an appropriate level of internal controls for safeguarding the assets of the District. Over the last sixteen years, there have been no citations or findings for recovery as a result of these audits.
